Dr. Jere will find the root cause of your low back pain.
It’s important to accurately diagnose the cause of the low back pain. Using a variety of diagnostic techniques, Dr. Jere locates the exact source of your problem.
As a complimentary service for the community, Dr. Jere offers a Free Review of Back X-Rays and MRIs.
One of the most common questions Dr. Jere is asked is “WHY does my low back hurt so much?”
You may be wondering the same thing. In order to answer your question, we need to show you a little bit of how your back works.
In your back, you have 33 bones that make up your spine. Each of these is called a “vertebra.” These are hard bones that help protect all the important nerves that go from your brain, down your spine and spread all over your body—these are the nerves you use to feel everything in your environment.
There’s a soft tissue in between each of these bones that gives padding for the nerves and also allows you to move—make twisting motions, bend over and do all sorts of other awkward movements if you’re a fan of golf, yoga or gymnastics. The soft, padded tissue between each back bone is called a “disc.” In the image to the left you can see what a normal disc looks like.
Just like a jelly doughnut, if you put too much pressure on one part of it, the outside layer of the disc can tear and the “jelly” insides can squirt out. This is what your doctor is talking about when he tells you that you have a herniated disc, bulging disc, ruptured disc or slipped disc. These are all when the inside of the disc has popped out to a certain degree.
The jelly-like padding between your back bones is no longer where it should be and now your body weight is pushing two back bones together and squeezing directly on the nerve in between them.
Many of the nerves in your low back go down your legs, which is why low back problems lead to pains in the legs.
Medication and back surgery (usually for some kind of disc degeneration or spinal deformity) are the typical medical prescriptions for chronic low back pain. Medications, such as muscle relaxants, pain killers and antidepressants, only address the symptoms and can have serious side effects.
Back surgery can be painful, expensive and have uncertain success. In back surgery the degenerated or deformed bone or discs are removed or fused, or artificial bone or discs are introduced into the spine. In 2004 a study published in the international journal Spine found that 40% of patients who underwent back surgery had no decrease in pain.
Dr. Jere uses many advanced chiropractic techniques that can help alleviate low back pain
Newer in the field of back pain relief is laser spine surgery, promoted as a minimally invasive alternative to open back surgery. It uses “endoscopic” surgery—the use of a slender instrument (an endoscope) to view the inside of a body. It is however, still surgery, and can have the problems of any back surgery.
A course of Chiropractic adjustments, particularly the advanced style of chiropractic that Dr. Jere practices, in which he uses a variety of techniques and technologies, can relieve a lot of chronic low back pain. Often the chiropractic adjustments are most effective in combination with targeted nutrition and massage.
Herniated discs, however, should not be treated with chiropractic adjustments as these can make the disc even worse! Instead, Dr. Jere recommends Spinal Decompression Therapy.
Physical therapy and exercise can help although they don’t generally correct the fundamental issues in chronic low back pain. However, exercise such as stretching or traction can put more stress on your lower back and create more damage. Any exercise regime for chronic low back pain is best coordinated with Dr. Jere.
Holistic alternative treatments, such as acupuncture, can have limited success. Nutritional supplements are often sold, but these will have no effect on a herniated, ruptured or bulging disc.
Spinal Decompression Therapy is used to treat a herniated disc.
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a breakthrough, completely non-surgical treatment for low back pain, especially as caused by disc problems, such as herniated discs, bulging discs, disc protrusion, slipped discs, ruptured discs, degenerated discs or annular tears.
Other low back pain problems, such as sciatica and pinched nerves, can also benefit from spinal decompression therapy, although Dr. Jere usually treats these conditions with regular chiropractic first.
Studies show that Spinal Decompression Therapy has a greater than 70% success rate, however, Dr. Jere has a 90% success rate, achieved by combining spinal decompression therapy with a nutritional and exercise program!
Spinal decompression is a painless technique in which precision instruments are used to pin-point exact areas of the spine that are afflicted. The compressed spine is now decompressed by creating a vacuum (suction), which allows blood to flow in to deliver nutrients that heal the affected disc(s).

After I dislocated my shoulder, Family Life put me right back together. I know, being a chiropractor myself, that it would have taken three times as long to recover without Family Life Chiropractic. Thanks all!
