3 Benefits of Ergonomics in the Workplace
Do you sit behind a desk for hours at a time? An ergonomically designed space — including adjusted chair height, spaced-out equipment, and good posture at your desk — may be key to helping you feel your best at work.
At Family Life Chiropractic, we believe that ergonomics is important for every business to understand. Here are three benefits of practicing ergonomics in the workplace.
What Is Ergonomics?
The term “ergonomics” means arranging items in a workspace to best accommodate those using them.
According to a study, 50-70% of office employees spend most of their day sitting behind a desk with limited movement. Combined with chronic stress, this sedentary lifestyle can lead to different health problems.
At Family Life Chiropractic, we raise awareness about workplace ergonomics so you can lead a better, more productive lifestyle. Proper workplace ergonomics can also help prevent injuries that may, eventually, warrant a chiropractic visit.
Tips for Better Workplace Ergonomics
Here are a few ergonomic tips our chiropractor, Dr. Jere, frequently shares with patients:
- Adjust the height of your chair so your feet rest comfortably on the floor, with your hips aligned with your knees.
- If possible, choose a chair that supports your spine.
- Keep your mouse and other key objects next to your keyboard to avoid reaching. Stand up to reach anything you can’t touch while sitting.
- Use a headset to prevent neck strain when making phone calls.
- Place your monitor directly in front of you, a couple of feet away. The top of the screen should be at or below eye level. Make sure the brightest light source is to the side.
- Check your posture, and adjust your alignment if you’re not centered in front of your keyboard.
3 Benefits of Ergonomics
-
Improves Health
Ergonomic workplaces can improve your health by reducing stress-related pain. Typically, it begins in the cardiovascular system and spreads to other parts of the body. As a result, your heart will be healthier than it would be in a standard work environment.
Additionally, adjusting workstations to your height will help you feel less tension in your body. Not only will this prevent strain on your eyes and neck, but it helps increase blood flow which can lessen swelling in your legs.
-
Increases Productivity
It’s easier to focus on tasks when you’re comfortable in your workplace. The use of ergonomics can reduce pain and strengthen your muscles, which helps improve mental focus. This allows you to concentrate on your work, resulting in higher productivity levels.
Combining different workstation ergonomics sets employees up for success since they’ll likely be more comfortable and engrossed in their work.
A well-designed workplace can also improve staff satisfaction, resulting in a lower turnover rate.
-
Encourages Safety in the Workplace
Slips and trips, as well as falling objects, are among the most common causes of accidents in the workplace. Ergonomics creates a safer work environment and increased visibility, reducing potential hazards and injuries.
You can keep your employee’s work consistent by providing them with a safe, happy environment where they can thrive.
