Here’s what causes tendinitis and how it’s treated at our Clearwater chiropractic office.
What is Tendinitis?
Tendinitis describes an irritation of the tendons. Tendons are what attach your muscles to your bones. Unfortunately, these connective tissues can be overworked. If your tendons become inflamed or pulled, tendinitis can develop.
What Does Tendinitis Feel Like?
Tendinitis pain is a dull ache around where the tendon meets the bone. In many cases, this pain is made worse by movement. The affected joint will be tender, and you may have difficulty moving that area of your body.
Other symptoms of tendinitis can include:
- A crackling sensation when you move the affected area
- Tenderness and swelling
- A lump on the tendon
- Redness and hot flashes
The symptoms of tendinitis can worsen if you continue to use the affected joint. Most of the time, tendinitis heals in about two to four weeks. However, chronic cases may take more than six weeks to recover.
What Causes Tendinitis?
In general, tendinitis is the result of repetitive movements or overuse.
For example, runners may develop jumper’s knee after putting too much stress on their knees. Golfers can develop tendinitis along the inside of the elbow, while tennis players typically experience tendinitis pain on the outside.
Tendinitis may develop suddenly in response to acute injury that causes joint hyperextension. You can also develop tendinitis gradually, without realizing it. Your ankles, hips, and even your jaw joints can develop tendinitis.
Additionally, tendinitis can be caused by common diseases, such as osteoarthritis.
Types of Tendinitis
Tendinitis can happen anywhere in the body, but it’s most common in your ankles, knees, and elbows.
Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis affects the tendon that joins your calf muscles to your heel bones.
The injury is common among runners and is typically caused by tendon overuse. Symptoms of Achilles tendinitis may include heel pain and tenderness, which are made worse by walking or running.
Jumper’s Knee
The tendons in your knees connect the bottom of your kneecaps to the tops of your shins. Running is the most common cause of jumper’s knee, as it puts repetitive strain on your knees.
This condition can cause pain towards the bottom of the kneecaps. Jumper’s knee can also result in minor tears in the tendon, which weaken your knees over time and cause debilitating knee pain.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is a type of tendinitis caused by playing racquet sports, such as tennis. The repeated motion of serves and strokes causes tenderness in the area where the forearm connects to the elbow.
Those with tennis elbow may also experience muscle weakness and stiffness. Tendinitis pain may increase gradually over weeks or months and worsen when the outer elbow area is touched or moved.
Tennis elbow can also cause shoulder pain as your body compensates for your elbow’s lack of mobility.
Golfer’s Elbow
Golfer’s elbow occurs when the tendons of your inner elbow are damaged. Similar to tennis elbow, the condition is caused by repetitive motions such as swinging a golf club.
Common symptoms of golfer’s elbow include pain in the forearm and soreness along the inner part of the elbow.
How to Treat Tendinitis
At Family Life Chiropractic, we will start with a physical examination.
This includes an assessment of your spinal alignment, joint structures, and your medical history. Diagnostic muscle testing, a tool that identifies weaknesses in the body, may also be used to determine if tendinitis is causing your joint pain.
Our chiropractors, Dr. Jere & Dr. Philip will then use targeted chiropractic adjustments to correct imbalances that may be causing chronic tendon inflammation. He may also recommend cold laser therapy to reduce pain and swelling, allowing your body to repair damaged tissue.
Additionally, Dr. Jere & Dr. Philip may prescribe corrective exercises and lifestyle changes to reduce pain going forward.
